[Also in Group XXI] 2 In an apparatus for the production of mechanical foam for fire-fighting purposes, a foam stabilising agent is supplied by a pipe 9, into a jet chamber bounded upstream and downstream by plates 2, 4 having one or more aligned orifices 3, 5 respectively, and is induced into the water stream by the suction of the jet or jets formed by the orifices 3, and a by-pass passage 10 connects a point upstream in the main water stream with the jet chamber the by-pass passages 10 being provided with a valve 11 the adjustment of which varies the quantity of foam stabilizing agent induced. The foam tube 7 shown in Fig. 3 carries at its inlet end a strainer 14 upstream of a single orifice jet plate 2 having associated therewith a valve disc 20 carried by an arm 21 on a spindle 22 connected to a handle 18 which can be externally operated to control the main water stream. The by-pass passage 10, Fig. 2, is formed in the body of the casing and is controlled either by a needle valve 28, or by a cylindrical valve, Fig. 5 (not shown), operated by a handle 29 having an indicator pointer 33. The foam stabilizing agent is introduced through a fitting 24 and the air is entrained through openings 8.
