Abstract
An adhesive for bonding articles of natural or synthetic rubber comprises a vulcanizable synthetic rubber, a solvent therefor, a reinforcing filler, and a curing agent; the synthetic rubber comprising a polymer of butadiene or of substituted butadiene, and/or a copolymer of butadiene or of substituted butadiene with a copolymerizable aryl vinyl compound, the polymer or copolymer having an average molecular weight of at least 200,000. The preferred synthetic rubber is a butadienestyrene copolymer and may be used in an amount of 45-85 per cent by weight of the total solids. The solvent may be benzene, xylene or hexane, the reinforcing filler may be carbon black and the curing agent sulphur. Optional ingredients are natural or synthetic resins having a melting point of 70-140 DEG C., such as modified phenol-formaldehyde resins, coumarone indene resins and rosin, these resins may constitute up to 60 per cent of the synthetic rubber. The adhesive is of particular use in splicing tyres and it may be made from the composition of the tyre stock to be compounded by addition of the appropriate solvent. In a typical Example (No. 1) at a tread stock consisting of a butadiene-styrene copolymer, high abrasion furnace carbon black, stearic acid, zinc oxide, "Santocure" (Registered Trade Mark) and sulphur was spliced by means of an adhesive of the same composition but containing enough "Solvesso" (Registered Trade Mark) No. 1 to make a 15 per cent solution.
