Abstract
A tyre tread is formed from a vulcanised composition of a butadiene-styrene copolymer having a styrene content of 30% to 55% by weight, and a sufficient quantity of hydrocarbon oil, up to 50 parts per 100 parts of copolymer by weight, incorporated before coagulation of the copolymer latex, to give a second order transition temperature of the oil-extended copolymer lower than -35 DEG C. and preferably within the range -35 DEG C. to -48 DEG C. The preferred compositions have a styrene content of 36\sB2% and incorporate 30\sB10 parts of hydrocarbon oil per 100 parts by weight of the copolymer. The uncompounded copolymer preferably has a Mooney viscosity at 120 DEG C. of 30 to 65 and may be compounded with between 5% and 10% by weight of additional oil, with or without tar, and 45% to 75% by weight of carbon black, all referred to the weight of the extended copolymer. A particular example, using a 64:36 by weight butadiene styrene copolymer extended with 33 parts of hydrocarbon oil per 100 parts of copolymer, is compounded as follows:- .Copolymer (including oil).100.00 parts .Sulphur.1.75 parts .Mercaptobenzothiazole.1.0 parts .Stearic acid.1.0 parts .Zinc Oxide.1.0 parts .Antioxidant ("Nonox HFN").0.75 parts .Antioxidant ("Santoflex AW").0.75 parts .Mineral oil.7.0 parts .High abrasion furnace black.50.0 parts ("Nonox" and "Santoflex" are Registered Trade Marks) In a further example, half the mineral oil is replaced by pine tar, the high abrasion furnace black is replaced by 60 parts of SAF black and only 1.0 part of sulphur is used.
