Abstract

805,691. Electron beam apparatus. DOLDER, K. T., and KLEMPERER, O. E. H. July 26, 1955. [July, 28, 1954], No. 22003/54. Class 39(1). In order to introduce negative spherical aberration at a cross-over formed by an electron lens for the purpose of reducing the effect of positive spherical aberration, the beam current I, the voltage V at the cross-over and the semi-angle of convergence # at which the electron beam crosses over are chosen to satisfy the relationship where I is measured in amperes and # is expressed in radians. As shown where electrons from a cathode 1 are focused by the lens action of grid electrode 2 and accelerating electrode 3 to a first cross-over 6, a second correcting cross-over 7 is formed by the lens action of accelerating electrode 3 and decelerating electrode 4. The lens formed by electrodes 4 and 5 may be purely electrostatic or formed by a combination of electrostatic and magnetic fields. Plane aperature diaphragms may be provided within the electrode 4 and at the end adjacent to electrode 3. An example specifying dimensions and voltages is given and aberration curves of #<SP>2</SP> against back focal distance are shown for various volumes of current and voltage.
