Abstract

803,448. Rotary conical plug valves. INDUSTRIAL PLASTIC FABRICATORS, Inc. May 17, 1956, No. 15408/56. Class 135. A rotary conical plug valve comprises a polyvinyl chloride plug 12 having embedded in and standing slightly proud from its conical surface a pair of bearing elements 40, 42 which in the closed position of the plug seal oppositely disposed ports 48, 50 in a polyvinyl chloride housing 10. The upper face of the plug and a shoulder 18 on the housing are formed with co-planar semi-circular annular ribs 28, 20 respectively which co-operate with a thin resilient washer 30 backed by a washer 32 of softer material. A screw-threaded cap 14 having a clearance fit with the plug stem 24 presses the washers into sealing engagement with the ribs. The bearing elements 40, 42 and the washer 30 are made from tetrafluoroethylene, a material which is corrosion-resistant and in contact with polyvinyl chloride has a low coefficient of friction. The washer 32 may be made from natural or synthetic rubber.
