Abstract
803,306. Stuffing-box substitutes. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING, Inc. Jan. 3, 1957 [March 6, 1956], No. 285/57. Class 122 (5). In a centrifugal pump for use with hightemperature high-pressure liquids, such as a boiler circulating pump, and comprising an impeller 18 on a shaft 20 having a bearing 32 adjacent the impeller and a stuffing-box located outwardly of the bearing and in which leakage of hot pumped liquid along the shaft is prevented by sealing liquid supplied at a pressure slightly greater than that in the pump chamber 16, to a chamber 34 between the bearing and the stuffing-box, the pressure of the sealing liquid reduced before it reaches the stuffing- box by having to pass through the restriction clearance 48 between the shaft and a surrounding sleeve 46 and damage to the stuffing-box packing 36 by impingements thereon of the stream of sealing liquid issuing from the outward end of the sleeve 46 is prevented by a deflector flange 50 secured to or integral with the shaft. The sealing liquid is supplied at passage 40 and discharged through passage 42.
