803,002. Iron manufacture. SOC. DES ACIERIES DE POMEY. Aug. 8, 1955 [Aug. 18, 1954], No. 2281655. Class 72 A method of manufacturing pig iron in a blast furnace comprising injecting a solid, liquid, or gaseous fuel, supplied through an auxiliary circuit independent of the normal blowing circuit, into the furnace through conduits located at an upper level above the level of the normal tuyeres, the upper level being situated between the isotherms 1200‹C. and 1500‹C. As shown, a blast furnace 1 has normal blowing tuyeres 3 and additional tuyeres 10, situated at a point between the isotherms 1200‹C. and 1500‹C., through the injection tubes 4 of which a solid, liquid, or gaseous fuel may be injected. The fuel may be fuel oil, producer gas, or a solid, powdered fuel suspended in fuel oil, neutral gas, or reducing gas, e.g. carbon monoxide, hydrogen or gasified petroleum products, or in a gas having an endothermic reaction, e.g. carbon dioxide.
