Class 72 [Also in Group XII] In order to prevent freezing up in a blast furnace operating with a blast containing more than 30 per cent oxygen, the tuyeres are spaced closer together than in normal practice, e.g. at a distance of less than 1.1 metres and preferably 0.3-0.6 meters apart, and, in addition to the oxygen, carbon monoxide or a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen or carbon monoxide and gaseous hydrocarbons is supplied through the tuyeres. Dotted lines 20, indicate the extent of the fusion zone round the mouths of the tuyeres using oxygen alone and the corresponding lines 22 indicate the extension of the fusion zone obtained by the addition of carbon monoxide &c. to the blast.
