Abstract

802,805. Nuclear reactors. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Aug. 23, 1956 [Aug. 26, 1955], No. 25740/56. Class 39(4). A fuel element for a nuclear reactor comprises a bar of fissile or fertile material enclosed in a sheath, the cross-sections of the bar and sheath being such that the sheath is only partly filled by the bar, and spacing means such as bosses, ribs or distance rings are arranged to prevent contact between the bar and the wall of the sheath or to limit the contact to that occurring at spacing means provided on the bar. In Fig. 3 a bar 1 of uranium, plutonium or thorium is supported within an aluminium sheath 2 by longitudinally spaced groups of circumferentially distributed radial pins 5 provided either on the bar or on the sheath. In another arrangement, Fig. 4, distance rings 6 are provided on the bar and annular recesses 8 are formed on the bar in the vicinity of the rings 6 to prevent any increase of neutron flux near the rings. The spacing means are preferably formed of non-fissile or fertile material having a melting point higher than that of the bar or of the sheath. In a further arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown), the spacing means are of moderating material, e.g., graphite, in the form of semi-circular parts which fit into annular grooves formed in the bar. By spacing the bar from the sheath the danger of a high pressure within the sheath due to the generation of gaseous fission products is reduced.
