Abstract

802,556. Lubricating dynamo-electric machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 23, 1956 [Nov. 25, 1955], No.35957/56. Class 35. [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXIV] A lubricating arrangement for a machine having a shaft 5 which is subjected to axial movement comprises a rotary lubricating pump 11 mechanically coupled to the end of the shaft 5 by a coupling 16 which prevents the transmission of thrust from the shaft 5 to the pump 11. The coupling 16 comprises peripherallysplined discs 19, 20 which are secured to pump shaft 15 and shaft 5 respectively and have splined connections with internal splines of a ring 21. Lubricant is supplied to the coupling through a bore 22 in the pump shaft 15 and is returned to an oil reservoir 13 through a conduit 26. Escape of lubricant along the shaft 5 is prevented by a seal assembly comprising grooves 31 and chambers 32, 33, 34. Oil collected in chambers 32, 33 is returned to the reservoir through ducts 37, 39 and conduit 26. Chamber 34 is supplied with air under pressure through a conduit 40 having an inlet 41 in communication with the pressure side of a fan 9 mounted on the shaft 5. The bearings 4 of the shaft 5 are supplied with oil from pump 11 through a conduit 14, and the oil is returned to the reservoir 13 through a conduit 14<SP>1</SP>. A conduit 12 connects the pump 11 with the reservoir 13. The invention is applied to a dynamo-electric machine and a turbine.
