Abstract
802,377. Supplying welding arcs. AIR REDUCTION CO., Inc. Feb. 29, 1956 [March 16, 1955], No. 6368/56. Class 38 (4). A main welding circuit comprises a full-wave rectifier 16 and has preferably a high current output and a low open-circuit voltage. An auxiliary keep-alive circuit comprises a fullwave rectifier 26 and has an output which is out-of-phase with the output of the main circuit and is connected in parallel with the main circuit across the welding arc. The keepalive circuit may have a relatively low current output and a relatively high open-circuit voltage. The main and auxiliary circuits are energized from the same single-phase source, and as shown, are connected to separate secondary windings of a common transformer. A variable inductance is provided for current control in the main circuit, whilst a phaseshifting capacitor 27 and current limiting resistor 28 are connected in the auxiliary circuit. In a modification, the main and auxiliary circuits are energized through different transformers connected to the same single-phase source, Fig. 4 (not shown). The phase-shifting component for the keep-alive circuit is then located in the primary circuit of the associated transformer.
