Abstract
Hydrocarbon lubricating oil is purified by first hydrogenating to an intermediate product of improved viscosity index using cobalt molybdate or nickel and tungsten sulphide as catalyst, then hydrogenating at least a part of the intermediate product at 400-650 DEG F. and 750-5000 p.s.i., in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst which preferably comprises platinum, alumina and a combined halogen such as aluminium fluoride; other suitable catalysts are Raney nickel, platinized charcoal or cobalt molybdate. Preferred conditions in the first hydrogenation are 625-720 DEG F., 3000 p.s.i. and a space velocity of 1-2 v./v./hr., which produces some splitting and a reduction in viscosity with some consumption of hydrogen. The second hydrogenation produces practically no change in viscosity or flash point and negligible consumption of hydrogen.
