Abstract

800,312. Stuffing-box substitutes; pistons. RAYBESTOS-MANHATTAN, Inc. May 18, 1956, No. 15614/56. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). A packing ring comprises an outer annular heel portion 6 which is of substantially rectangular cross-section and has an inner annular shoulder 11 less deep than the outer periphery of the heel, and an inner integral finger portion 7 which is connected to the heel by an annular neck 12 also less deep than the heel and is provided with an upstanding outer annular shoulder arranged, when a plurality of rings is assembled together, to engage the inner annular shoulder 21 of the adjacent ring. The finger 7 has a flat inclined upper face 14 and curved under face 13. The ring may be of rubber or plastic material, with or without a reinforcement of duck, asbestos, cloth, &c. If desired, relatively soft rings may be arranged between the heels of adjacent rings so that they become forced against the inner wall of the stuffing box. Instead of being used in a stuffing box as shown, the rings may be mounted on a piston.
