Abstract
800,177. Degassing metals. SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE. Ltd. Aug. 22, 1956 [Aug.22, 1955], No. 25695/56. Class 72 A method of degassing molten metal comprises passing the metal from a receiver or ladle into a vessel having a reduced pressure, then, after removal of the gases, restoring atmospheric pressure and casting the metal. As shown, a receiver 2, removably secured to a vessel 1, has a movable plug 4 sealing a hole which communicates with the vessel which may be evacuated by means of a pipe 15 connected to a vacuum pump. The molten metal enters the vessel 1 in a thin film, is immediately degassed, and collects on the floor of the vessel from which it is poured, after the inside pressure has been restored to atmospheric. through an opening 8 closed by a plug 10. The depth of metal in the vessel may be indicated by electrodes 16. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), a ladle may be supported in the vessel to receive the metal which may be passed into the vessel from another ladle.
