Abstract
1,232,510. Casting processes. LEYBOLDHERAEUS - VERWALTUNGS G.m.b.H. 5 Dec., 1969 [20 Dec., 1968], No. 59641/69. Heading B3F. [Also in Divisions F3-F4] A vacuum arc furnace, includes a water-cooled mould 16 mounted in a cooling jacket 18, a head portion 2 which receives a consumable electrode 1, and a housing 11 containing a gate valve 23 and gas tightly interconnecting the mould and head portion. During the melting process, flanges 13, 7 on the head 2 seal against a rim 15 of the mould 16 and a flange 10 of the housing 11 respectively to maintain the vacuum therein. After the melting and the withdrawal of the electrode stump, the head 2 is lifted slightly from the mould rim 15 to allow the gate valve 23 to be interposed over the mould rim 15, Fig. 2 (not shown). During this time, spring elements 9 continue to press the flange 7 against the flange 10, the slight movement of the head 2 being accommodated by flexible bellows 6 which connect the flange 7 to the remainder of the head 2. The head 2 is then relowered on to the gate valve, Fig. 3 (not shown), to sealingly press the latter against the mould rim 15, before being completely removed from the now sealed mould, Fig. 4 (not shown), for use elsewhere whilst the mould cools.
