Abstract
866,928. Crucibles. HERAEUS G.m.b.H., W. C. Nov. 18, 1957 [Nov. 17, 1956], No. 35854/57. Class 82(1) [Also in GroupsXI, XII and XXII] In a vacuum induction casting installation wherein the melting crucible 3 possesses a casting channel 7 located therebeneath closable by means of a movable sealing plug and surrounded by a second induction coil 8, the said coil is used to start the casting and also to warm the casting jet during the casting and for the temporary constriction of the casting jet. Air locks 14, 15, 16 enable moulds to be changed, and the crucible to be recharged, without breaking the vacuum in the main chamber 1, 10. Pouring is commenced by melting the solidified plug in the casting channel 7 by the coil 8 which is maintained energized during pouring. When a mould 12 is almost filled, the current in the coil 8 is increased to an extent to cause the jet to be considerably constricted, after which the sealing plug 9, 9<SP>1</SP> is brought into position under the channel 7 and the coil 8 switched off, metal thereupon freezing in the channel. The process is repeated when an empty mould is situated under the channel.
