A reinforced concrete, member having tensile reinforcement subjected to high stresses up to 4-4.5 tons per sq. cm. is reinforced by thin bars 3 of 0.5 sq. cm. maximum cross - sectional , area bent obliquely -towards the compressive area of the memberin relation todecreasing bending moment, the bent portions of each bar having a maximum perpendicular distance from the bent portion of an adjacent bar of 20 cms. so as to form evenly distributed shear reinforcement over the major part of the web of the member, between .the tension and compression areas, with the object of reducing stress crack widths in the concrete and to Keep the width of the cracks to 0.2-0.3 mm. at the loads stated above.
