Abstract

A composition for use in treating textiles comprises a compound of the general formula <FORM:0799045/IV (b)/1> or a homologue thereof, where R is an aliphatic or homocyclic hydrocarbon radical of at least 10 carbon atoms, urea, and one or more water-soluble inorganic salts which are capable of existing in at least one form containing water of crystallization and which are not deliquescent either with or without the water of crystallization. Compounds of the general formula or homologues thereof mentioned are N-dodecyl-N1:N1 - ethylene urea, N - heptadecyl - N1:N1-ethylene urea and N-octadecyl-N1:N1-ethylene- and N1:N1-(a ,b -propylene)-urea. The inorganic salts mentioned are aluminium sulphate hepta- and octadeca-hydrate, anhydrous sodium sulphate and carbonate and anhydrous magnesium sulphate. In examples of the composition other additives mentioned are: the condensation product of oleic acid and methyltaurine; polyglycol ether derivatives and the reaction product of diphenylmethane-4,41-diisocyanate and ethylene imine. The compositions may be applied to textiles in solution or aqueous dispersion and impart improved hand or water or dirt repellency.
