Abstract

799,001. Nuclear reactors. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Feb. 15, 1957 [Feb. 17, 1956], No. 5027/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(4). In a control system for fast fission or fusion reactors to neutron absorbing liquid is circulated through the reactor core. The liquid may be molten lithium alloyed with sodium. The volume and position of the lithium may be adjusted either by moving the ducting carrying the lithium or by controlling the liquid level. The lithium is circulated through a heat exchanger by a pump, which is by-passed to permit the continuous removal of by-products. Heating coils round the ducting maintain the lithium in liquid form when the reactor is operating on low power.
