Abstract

A method of manufacturing ornamental picture and like frames comprises the steps of applying a sheet of thermoplastic synthetic resin material over a mould of the size and having the configuration of the frame required, softening the material, forming the material to the mould by means of a vacuum-forming process whereby the sheet material forms a skin over the mould and is fashioned to the configuration thereof, allowing the sheet material to harden, removing it from the mould as a shell carrying externally the configurations of the mould and applying the shell over a base framework having similar major dimensions to the shell. The plastic material may be polyvinylchloride, polystyrene or polythene and is softened by heating. The mould is made of wood and provided with a plurality of holes through which suction may be applied. Indentations on the inner surface of the shell are filled, e.g., with plaster, and surplus material within the shell and around the edge thereof is removed before the shell is secured, as by adhesive, to the wood base framework. The plastic material may be transparent and include a glazed portion to cover the picture. The frame may be made from two or more frame sections joined together, each of which is produced from a mould of the size of the frame section to be provided. Such frame sections include at least one corner of the frame.
