Abstract
794,981. Nuclear fuel elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. May 4, 1955 [May 6, 1954], No. 13314/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(4). In a gas cooled reactor, a mechanical retaining device prevents movement of the fuel elements through the full duct by the thrust of the coolant gas current. The uranium fuse is in rod form, enclosed in aluminium and supported on a graphite carrier slidable in the horizontal fuel duct formed in the graphite bricks of the pile. The elements are hooked together to form a string within the duct and the retaining device engages the outer surface of the pile. A thrust upon the free end of retaining device, tending to discharge the fuel elements out through the far end of the duct, compresses a spring and releases the retaining catch at the pile surface, thus leaving the elements freely movable along the duct. The retaining catch consists of three members each of which engages the pile surface separately, an initial thrust causes two members to disengage simultaneously and a further thrust releases the third member. In one embodiment the third member also serves to lock the complete catch mechanism in the disengaged position.
