Abstract
794,955. Percussive tools. CONSOLIDATED PNEUMATIC TOOL CO., Ltd. Nov. 21, 1956, No. 35544/56. Class 124. A pneumatic rock drill having a manually operated air valve and means for supplying a spray of liquid against the rock being cut, has an obstructor co-operating with the air valve to preclude movement of the valve to open it, and means to retract the obstructor when the liquid pressure is above a predetermined value. As shown, a mushroom air valve 10 is operated by a trigger 5 which presses on a sleeve 4 surrounding the valve stem and having a space between the end of the stem and the cap of the sleeve to give some lost motion. An obstructor 3 in the form of an extension to a piston 36 is urged by a spring 17 into engagement with an annular groove 7 in the sleeve 4 and prevents movement of the sleeve to open the air valve. Water under pressure is introduced through an inlet 11 and by way of passages 13 and 16 enters a space 1 above the piston 36. When the water pressure is sufficient to overcome the resistance of the spring 17 the piston is moved to retract the obstructor from the groove 7, so allowing the sleeve to move and open the air valve. The stem 39 of a water supply valve 20 engages a cam 19 on the surface of,the sleeve and opens the water valve during the lost motion movement of the sleeve. The opening of the water valve takes place before the opening of the air valve so that water is supplied to sprayers 8 before the drill starts operating.
