794,872. Pressure relief valves. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. July 27, 1956 [May 7, 1956], No. 23312/56. Class 135. Relates to a pressure relief valve of the type having a valve closure member 4 biased to close an inlet 2 by an adjustable spring 6, or by a weight (not shown), a bellows 13 surrounding the valve stem 5 enclosing an area at the back of the valve closure member 4 equal to the area at the front of the closure member subjected to pressure in the inlet 2, so that buildup of back pressure in the valve outlet 22 will not raise the pressure in the inlet 2 necessary to open the valve. According to the invention, the valve stem 5 carries a piston 15 having an annular surface 14 equal in area to the annular surface 16 at the back of the valve closure member 4 lying between the bellows 13 and the projection of the valve stem 5 on to the closure member. The piston 15 lies in a cylinder 17 connected to the space within the bellows 13 by grooves 18, either in the valve stem 5 or the member supporting it. If the bellows 13 crack, back pressure in the valve outlet 22 acts upon the annular surface 16 on the back of the valve closure member 4 to produce a force additional to the spring &c., force biasing the closure member to shut the inlet 2, but simultaneously the same pressure acts upon the surface 14 of the piston 15 to produce a force in the opposite direction which equals and neutralizes this additional force. Thus the pressure in the inlet 2 at which the valve operates is always the same, irrespective of the back pressure in the outlet 22 and the pressure tightness of the bellows 13.
