Abstract

794,594. Brushes, handles. BAUDOUIN, J. Aug. 25, 1955 [Aug. 25, 1954; July 19, 1955], No. 24453/55. Classes 19 and 61. A brush is provided with a perforated plate through which the bristles may pass and with resilient means for urging the brush base to a retracted position with respect to the plate, the arrangement being such that by a simple movement of the hand the bristles may be moved to a projected position for use. The movement of the plate along the bristles may serve to clear hair or other matter from the brush. Fig. 2 shows a brush comprising a base plate 1 carrying bristles 2 a perforated plate 4 having a rim 8 and an elastic cover 7d. When the brush is pressed against the object to be brushed the bristles project through the perforated plate and on ceasing brushing the bristles return, the movement being cushioned by the necessity to draw air through the perforations. In Fig. 6 the brush is arranged telescopically inside the perforated member 4 and urged to a retracted position by a spring. In Fig. 7 the two parts of the brush are connected by a spring 7c, 7d forming a handle and which when pressed together by the hand cause the bristles to emerge through the perforations. Fig. 13 shows a further embodiment in which the brush 1 is normally retained within the body of the brush by a bow spring 10. By operating the handle 34 the bristles are moved forward into the position of use and the members 29 and 33 are such that the bristles are locked in position. Upon releasing the lock by pressing the opposite end of the handle the bristles return to the original retracted position. Fig. 12 shows a brush in which the bristles are supported on a spring 10 secured to the ends of two transverse arms 13, 14 located in slots in the sides 22 of the perforated member and spaced by a spacer 18, the whole being enclosed in an elastic member 24 and being such that the brush in its normal position is within the holder. Pressure applied to the sides of the brush causes the brushing element to move forward to the position shown whereupon a ball 16 rolls beneath the spacer to lock the brush element in position. To retract the brush element pressure is applied to the sides of the brush which is then tilted so that the ball rolls away and permits the brush element to return to the retracted position. The bristles may be silk filaments, bristle, horse hair, wire, vegetable fibre or a synthetic material such as a super-polyamide.
