1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to novel devices and more especially to those finding application in the field of cosmetics. In one of its specific aspects this invention relates to the combination of a lipstick rod and a spreader therefore carried by a single unitary support and carrying means. A more specific aspect of this invention is directed to a novel device for spreading lipstick cosmetic on the lips generally after the application thereto by the lipstick rod.
rIhe colored cosmetic generally termed lipstick has for many years been used to enhance the color of lips of human beings. This cosmetic ordinarily is of red color or of a shade of red and is of a greasy or waxy nature and is purchased on the open market in rod or small roll form. The rod or roll of lipstick is contained in a short tube or casing and may be moved into and out of the tube. When this cosmetic is to be applied to the lips, the rod of lipstick material is partially projected through the open end of the tube containing it and the free end of the lipstick is rubbed across both the upper and lower lips. Such an application of the lipstick on to the lips is not in itself entirely satisfactory because due to the broad free end of the relatively soft easily applied cosmetic the proper or desired shape of this cosmetic over the lips is not possible Consequently it has been necessary to employ the end of the small finger in an effort to evenly spread the lipstick and to attempt to shape the deposited cosmetic. This procedure has a number of disadvantages among which are (l) the end of the nger becomes coated with the highly colored lipstick material which adheres tenaciously to the skin and is not easily removed therefrom, (2) because the end of the little ringer is coated with the lipstick material, danger of transferring this material onto the users clothing, such as an evening gown is ever present, particularly since the necessary means for removing the lipstick are not always available at those places Where the lipstick is applied, (3) by using the end of any finger, it is very diiilcult, if not impossible to obtain an even distribution of the cosmetic and to properly shape the deposit. This invention was made in order to overcome the above as well as other disadvantages.
An object of this invention is to provide a unitary devi-ce including a lipstick rod and lipstick Spreader making readily available the necessary elements for applying and shaping such a cosmetio and eliminating the danger of accidental lipstick spotting on the clothing and also eliminating the soiling of hands with lipstick material and consequently making it entirely feasible to apply the lipstick and to shape it in any desired place.
Another object of this invention is to provide a novel device for shaping the lipstick on the lips after application of a deposit thereof on the lips.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a lipstick applicator for evenly applying and finely shaping lipstick material on the lips of the user.
Still another object of the invention is to prdvide a single unitary assembly which includes a source of lipstick material, and a spreader therefor so that the material may be deposited and shaped with the same unit.
These as Well as other objects of this invention Wil1 in part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.
Briefly the invention comprises a holder or carrier which may be in the nature of a hollow tube having a lipstick and short tube carrier therefor located in one end of said hollow tube and a lipstick spreader supported in a carrier therefor located in the other end of said hollow tube. The novel lipstick spreader may comprise a holder carrying a fairly rigid yet resilient rod having secured thereto tufts, knots or hunched filaments of cotton, Wool, nylon, paper, silk, rayon, etc. which are capable of retaining andof evenly spreading the cosmetic upon application of the spreader thereto. An alternative embodiment of a spreader is a pointed felted element. The lipstick material may be applied directly to the spreader before application of this material to the lips and the so loaded spreader may be used to coat and shape the lips, thus obviating the necessity of first depositing the material on to the lips by the use of the lipstick rod and then spreading and shaping the deposited cosmetic with the spreader.
This invention accordingly comprises the novel articles of manufacture possessing the features, properties and relation of elements which will be exemplied in the articles hereinafter described, and the scope, of the invention will be indicated in the claim.
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of the combination of a tubular carrier having the novel spreader located in one end thereof and the lipstick at the other end thereof.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical cross sectional view of a form of support and a spreader shown in perspective and coupled with said support.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an element which -case I3 is a pin I5.
3 may be employed in the production of a particular type of spreader,
Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of the spreader element after shaping and before coupling with a holder or support therefor.
Fig. 5 isa view showing the manner of shaping the lipstick on the lips after a deposit of this cosmetic has been made thereon.
Fig. 6 yis .another embodiment of Ya spreader which may besubstituted for the spreader of Figs. 3 and 4 and substituted for these elements in the construction shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 7 is a cross sectional view of still another embodiment of the invention.
According to this invention there is provided a hollow container or carrier IB. This container or carrier Il] may be composed of any desirable material, such as metal, wood, plastic or the like and it may be either transparent or opaque de pending. on the ultimate requisite design. In one of Vits forms, the container or carrier le may be a 'hollow metal cylinder having a highly polished outer surface and bayonet slot i2 at the .ends thereof. An ordinary rod (not shown) of lipstick is carried in an open lended lipstick `case I 3 having a base Id whose diameter is greater 'than that of container Iii. YThe outside diameter of Vcase I3 is slightly less than the interior diameter'of container i0. This rod'oflipstick cosmetic while not in use is located within the limits cf the short tubular case I3 but its free end may be moved out of the free end thereofwhen it is desired to use it. Projecting outwardly from the The lipstick rod and casing I`3 may 'be inserted into one of the open ends of the container lil and maybe demountably coupled Y therewith by 'locating the pin i5 in the closed end of the bayonet slot.
Anovel lipstick spreader or applicator Il may 'be .located Vin the vother end of the container i9.
rL'hespreader I5 vmay comprise a knurled knob or base .ITI lhavingran upwardly extending elongated tubularretainer I8 integral therewith. The base I] f isrecessed to provide an annular shoulder iii Whose inside diameter is slightly less lthan the internal diameter of the container le and whose outside diameterapproximates the corresponding dimension of container Iii. Carried by the tubu- 'lar lretainer I8 is the spreader proper 23. The
lspreader 20 may be of any convenient design but ispreferably of the type shown in Figure 3. This l spreader 2il may comprise short cotton, wool, rayon, nylon, etc. fibers which are relatively soft and pliable and capable of carrying the lipstick material and of spreading it without streaks.
vrihese short'and soft bers are located between a pair of thin. wires which are disposed in parallel Vrelation to each other and then twisted tightly around each other lso that the Afibers extend subl vth.e.loo,p,23 ,.the legs 26 may rst be twisted around eachother and Athen inserted in and coupled with the retainer I8. If desired the loop portion 23 of spreader .20 may be loaded or coated with the lipstick material before its first use if desired, and
may be employed both as an applicator and l spreader. The lbase il has Aa pin vfor coupling the yso spreader and its holder to the other open end of tube I0 in a similar manner to the case I3.
Instead of employing the spreader 2U, a spreader 2| as shown in Fig. 6 may be employed. This spreader 2| is a felted short rod of felted cotton, paper, cellulose or other soft absorbent iibers similar to the iibers of spreader 23. The upper or spreading end of the rod 2I is conical and its cylindrical section fits into :and is secured to the upper end of tube I8. The free end of the spreader 2i may be tapered in some other manner than being conical as shown.
In operation, when the separate lipstick rod and Acasing I3 are employed, the lipstick material is .deposited on the lips well within the outer limits 'to be attained. Then the lipstick and casing are recoupled with container Ill and the spreader and holder therefor is removed from container I0. With the knurled base I'I held between the thumb and the rst two fingers and the spreader 23 or 2I disposed towards the lips to 'be shaped, spreader 23 or 2i may be readily and easily moved to spread the deposited lipstick material and to obtain with nicety and no smearing the shape desired. When the spreader is used the deposited lipstick material is readily absorbed or carried by the fluffy vsoft bers and the twisted wires form a Yfairly stiff yet somewhat vresilient support. When the .spreader `2I is used in place of element 2U, the soft felted point Yforms a fairly stiff yet somewhat soft and resilient element.
In another embodiment of this invention there may be provided a lipstick ,supply ychamber '30 having a somewhat conical or tapered upper end 3l having a central smal1 opening therethrough. The body of thechamber 30 is essentially of cylindrical form. This `chamber 3@ may be inthe form of a closed `lower end collapsible tube or it may be rigid throughout. If desired the lower .end of the chamber 30 may have a bottom closure with a central opening therein accommodating an interiorly threaded sleeve .33. Located in the lower part of said chamber 3G is a piston 34 having a threaded piston rod 32 connected thereto and depending therefrom. The piston rod 32 extends through the opening in the closure 35 and makes threaded engagement with the collar 33. That end of the piston rod 32 1ocated exteriorly of the chamber 30 has a winged nut or knurled knob 36 secured thereto for turning the rod 32 and for moving the cylinder 34 towards or away from the forward or tapered end 3l of the chamber 3B. Secured to the cone 3I extending therefrom and communicating with the opening therein is a slender hollow :tube 31. Concentric with the tube 31 and also secured to the cone 3I is a hollow tube 38 whose upper limi-t is substantially that of the upper limit of tube 3l'. A spreader 2li which is bent in the yform of an inverted U has its legs disposed and locked in the space between the tubes 31 and 38. This inverted U may be somewhat enlarged at its looped end to provide a space between the fold or loop and the upper end of the tube 31. The lower end of the cone 3l may have a threaded collar 39 secured thereto and an elongated cover cap 4i) of substantially the same diameter as that of .the chamber 3i! may be threadedly connected to the chamber 30 through the collar 439. In this embodiment of the invention the chamber 3U is i'illed with a quantity of lipstick material 4I either in the form of a rod or ina somewhat softer or pasty form. When it is -desired to use the device, the cap 40 is unscrewed therefrom. Then the knob 36 is turned Whereupon the piston 34 is moved upwardly forcing or extruding some of the material 4| up through the tube 31 into the space between the U shaped portion of the spreader and the upper end of the tube 31 and on to the U shaped portion of the spre-ader itself. The U shaped portion of the spreader is thus loaded with the desired amount of lipstick material and the device is now readsr for application, spreading and shaping of the cosmetic.
While the various aspects of this invention have been described in detail, they are not to be limited thereby because these various embodiments are merely illustrative and are subject to various changes and modifications.
I claim:
