Abstract
Solutions of acrylonitrile polymers and copolymers, e.g. with methyl methacrylate, from which threads may be dry or wet spun, are made using a solvent mixture of glycollic acid nitrile (60 to 95 per cent) and ethylene chlorhydrin. Reducing agents such as sulphur dioxide or formaldehyde may be present to improve colour stability. In Example (2) the polyacrylonitrile solution is spun into a bath of xylene (80 per cent) and butanol, stretched and fixed by heating.
