Abstract

1:1 - Difluoro - 1:2:2 - trichloroethane is manufactured by the action of hydrogen fluoride on pentachlorethane in presence of chlorine and an antimony halide at superatmospheric pressure and above about 110 DEG C., and removing the hydrogen chloride formed. In examples, pentachlorethane is heated to 130 DEG C. with SbCl3 or SbF3, HF and a small quantity of chlorine, to give high yields of the main product with small quantities of other fluorochlorethanes.
