Abstract

792,317. Single and twin hull boats. COCKBURN, D. H. Jan. 30, 1956 [Jan. 31, 1955], No. 2786/55. Classes 113 and 114. In a boat having a plane planing surface 14 which tapers fore and aft of the centre of buoyancy, said surface is inclined downwards in the rearward direction at a small angle (between 1 and 8 degrees). The curve of successive submerged cross-sectional areas 18 taken normal to the longitudinal axis of the boat conforms substantially to a versed-sine curve for the length forward of the centre of buoyancy and to a trochard curve for the length aft of the centre of buoyancy, In one embodiment the planing surface is narrower than the width of the hull, the sides of the hull being bulged outwards above the water line. In other embodiments hulls with planing surfaces according to the invention are incorporated in a twin hull motor boat and in a catamaran type sailing boat. According to the Provisional Specification a device for steering and lateral resistance comprises two thin vertical plates, one immersed forward and one aft of the centre of the sails, which plates are pivoted and joined together by a connecting rod, a tiller being fitted to the aft plate. The plates are normally in line but move in unison when the tiller is operated, the front plate pulling the bow in one direction and the rear plate moving the stern in the other.
