Abstract
792,128. Washing-machines. PARNALL (YATE), Ltd. Nov. 9, 1955 [Aug. 10, 1954], No. 23273/54. Class 138 (2). A washing machine comprises a centrifugal extractor 2, water agitating means in the form of a flexible member 12 of e.g. diaphragm form disposed in or on the base of the extractor 2 and reciprocable axially of the extractor, drive means for rotating the extractor, and means for effecting the axial reciprocation of the flexible member conjointly with rotation of the extractor. The diaphragm 12 is connected at 14 to a shaft 13 which carries at its lower end a horizontal bar 15 provided with rollers 16 biased by a spring (not shown) into engagement with the upper face of a hill and dale-shaped annular cam to produce reciprocation of the diaphragm 12. The extractor 2 is supported by a drive tube 6 driven through a belt and pulley by an electric motor 5 and having a pin-and-slot connection 21, 22 with the shaft 13. The cam 17 is supported by a pivoted lever 18 and is moved downwardly clear of the rollers 16 for spin drying. A two-speed motor 5 may be used, providing 15 to 20 r.p.m. for washing and 1500 to 2000 r.p.m. for spin drying. The change from slow to high speed is accompanied by automatic lowering of the cam 17. A single speed motor may alternatively be used in conjunction with a two or more speed gear-box. The underside of the diaphragm 12 may be used as a piston to circulate or discharge the water, in conjunction with a cock-controlled discharge pipe. In a modification (not shown) a. cylindrical cam providing a push-and-pull movement of the shaft 13 may be used.
