Abstract
791,976. Making binder-coated glass-fibre moulding-preforms. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. Dec. 28, 1956 [Jan. 6, 1956], No. 600/56. Addition to 723,724. Class 87(2). In the parent Specification a preform P, Fig. 1, of glass fibre coated with polyester resin or other binder is made by cutting glass strands S into short lengths S<SP>1</SP> by bringing them into engagement with cutting knives 49 mounted about the periphery of a roller 48, the knives forcing the strands within the periphery of a resilient-surfaced strand conveyer roller 45 so that the strands are folded over the edges of the knives to ensure cutting of all the fibres in the strands at the same place ; and coating the lengths S<SP>1</SP> with a binding material supplied as from a hopper 60 through an opening 64 in a duct 35 along which the lengths are blown to a matrix 20: the parent Specification also describes coating the strands before they are cut. According to the present invention the binding material is applied to the cut strands after they come to rest on the matrix, as by feeding the binder from a hopper 160 into the chamber 16 in which the cut strands are collected upon the matrix ; binding material may also be applied to the cut strands before they come to rest upon the matrix. A preform having its upper or lower surface, or both surfaces, formed of individual fibres may be obtained by increasing the speed of the cutting rolls 45, 48 at the beginning and/or end of the operation, this increase in speed resulting in the opening out of the strands into their individual fibres. The remainder of the description is as in the parent Specification. According to the Provisional Specification the binding material may be applied to the strands before they are cut into short lengths, or immediately afterwards, or during their passage through duct 35, or after or while they drop upon the matrix, or in any combination of these ways, and the duct may be lined with smooth copper, aluminium or tinplated metal.
