Abstract
1,143,212. Springs. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP. 14 March, 1966 [15 March, 1965], No. 11112/66. Heading F2S. [Also in Division D1] A tensile member comprises a plurality of continuous filament glass fibre strands 28, Fig. 3, all of the same length and arranged in close parallel formation without mutual twist to form a core 26, at least one glass fibre overwrap element 32 wound around the core 26, and a solidified matrix material 34 impregnating the strands 28 and the overwrap element 32 to bond them together and cover the overwrap 32. The matrix may be a synthetic resin, for example, a cured epoxy resin. The components of the tensile member may fall within the limits of 90% to 25% glass and 10% to 75% by weight of resin. Such tensile members may be used as springs of coil or leaf form, which may also function as shock absorbers.
