Abstract

<PICT:0791222/III/1> In a heat exchanger in which gases, vapours, or mixtures thereof take part in chemical reactions, at least four cells 3 filled with heat storage material and housed in a container 1 all communicate at one end with a chamber 4, and at the other end the cells communicate cyclically some with a rotatable gas supply chamber 5 and some with a chamber 11 with a gas outlet 12. A sectorial plate at the top of the side wall 14 of the chamber 5 closes the lower ends of the cells between the groups of cells receiving and delivering gas from and to the cells. Vapour to expel gas from these intermediate cells into the chamber 4 may be supplied through a tubular shaft 6, passages in the wall 14 and holes in the sectorial plate. The filling in the cells may be metallic, refractory, or ceramic, or part or all of it may be catalytic. It may form tortuous or parallel passages for the gas. The chamber 4 may also have a filling. A passage 16 may be used for introducing a liquid or gas into the chamber 4, or for tapping heated gases from it. The gases flowing to the chamber 4 take up heat from the fillings in the cells, react and liberate heat in the chamber 4, and give the heat up to the fillings after leaving the chamber 4.
