Abstract
<PICT:0783713/III/1> In a process for the separation of a gas mixture into its constituents by continuous circulation of the mixture through a tube containing material which causes the various constituents to flow at different rates through the tube, the temperature of the tube is alternately lowered and raise so that some or all of the constituents are alternately condensed and volatilized. A carrier gas, e.g. nitrogen, is pumped from reservoir f through tube a which is immersed in a liquid bath h, the temperature of which may be varied; the gas mixture is introduced at g and separated fractions are examined in cell c by means of an infra-red gas analyser, an infra-red spectrometer, or a mass spectrometer; transmission measurements may be made with ultraviolet, visible, or infra-red radiation, or variations in thermal conductivity may be measured. The tube a may contain activated charcoal for the separation of permanent gases and lower hydrocarbons, or kieselguhr mixed with dinonyl phthalate for less volatile compounds. Isotopes may be separated when a suitable gaseous or low boiling compound can be prepared.
