Abstract

A germicidal detergent composition in powder form comprises (a) a major proportion of an alkaline inorganic detergent salt, e.g. 60-95 per cent of an alkali metal silicate, phosphate, polyphosphate, carbonate or borate, or mixtures thereof; (b) a minor proportion of an organic soapless detergent, e.g. 0.5-15 per cent of an alkyl sulphate, alkyl aryl sulphonate or, more preferably, a non-ionic detergent such as an ethylene oxide condensate with an alkyl phenol, a sorbitan fatty acid ester or a glycol; (c) a minor proportion of an inorganic hypochlorite, e.g. not more than 15 per cent of an alkali metal hypochlorite such as lithium hypochlorite or chlorinated trisodium phosphate; and (d) a minor proportion, generally not more than 5 per cent, of a bactericidal compound of the general formula: <FORM:0790425/III/1> generally in the form of an alkali metal salt thereof, where R is OH, O-alkyl of 1-18 carbon atoms, NH2, NH-alkyl of 1-18 carbon atoms, Cl, Br or an alkyl group of 1-18 carbon atoms, Ar is a benzene ring, X is H, Cl or an alkyl group of 1-5 carbon atoms, Y is H or Cl, and the group SO2NXY is ortho or para to R. Preferred embodiments of ingredient (d) are those compounds in which R represents methyl, ethyl or NH2, for example such compounds as sulphanilamide, para - toluene sulphonamide, chloramine-T, dichloroamine-T, and toluene ortho-sulphonsodiochloramide. The compositions may additionally include such adjuncts as the alkali metal chlorides and sulphates, but should not contain more than 6 per cent of water. The Provisional Specification also refers to the use of 1:3-dichloro-5:5-dimethyl hydantoin as the bactericidal agent. U.S.A.
