Abstract

A powdered distributable washing-composition consists of a polyglycerol or polyglycol ether in admixture with a calcined salt obtained by heating an alkali salt of a mineral acid with escape of a gaseous component such as water or carbon dioxide. The ethers are represented by the formula R1.R.X.(ZO)n.Z1.OH, in which R is an aliphatic or isocyclic radical; R1 is hydrogen or an aliphatic radical; X is O, <FORM:0469334/III/1> (where R2 is an aliphatic radical); Z is CH2.CH2, <FORM:0469334/III/2> same as Z; and n is greater than 1. Such compounds are obtained by treating fatty alcohols, fatty acids, fats, waxes, resins, phenols, naphthols, amines, ethanolamides with ethylene, propylene, or butylene oxides. Suitable calcined salts are, sodium or potassium carbonate (obtained by calcining the bicarbonate), sodium pyrophosphate (from disodium phosphate), sodium sulphate (from Glauber's salt) or sodium borate (from borax). The heat treatment results in the formation of hollow pores in the salt which thereby have absorbing properties similar to kieselguhr. In examples, the reaction products of (1) iso-octyl phenol and ethylene oxide; (2) dodecyl alcohol and propylene oxide; (3) ricinoleic acid and ethylene oxide; (4) oleic acid ethanolamide and ethylene oxide; (5) a primary amine obtained by hydrogenating a mixture of nitriles obtained from coconut-oil fatty acids and ethylene oxide; (6) dodecyl phenol or abietinic acid with ethylene and butylene oxide or (7) tall oil and polyglycerol, are mixed with the calcined salts. Other (non-calcined) salts which may be added are, sodium perborate, sodium chloride, magnesium sulphate, sodium metaphosphate, potassium sulphate or percarbonate. The ethers and crystalline salts may be mixed together and subsequently dehydrated and calcined.
