Abstract

790,263. Respirators. Z. & W. MACHINE PRODUCTS, Inc. Oct. 10, 1955, No. 28789/55. Class 81 (2). Respiratory apparatus comprises a hollow body 1 with an outlet communicating with a face mask 24, handles containing gases under pressure extending from opposite sides of the hollow body 1, means for releasing the gases and means 32 connected with the body member 1 for temporarily storing said gases. Gas cylinders 40 in the form of handles are screwed to a body member 1 connected with an inflatable bag 32 and a carbon dioxide absorption cylinder 9 which is connected with a mask 24. As the cylinders 40 are screwed into the body member 1 a valve stem 53 of a check valve 50 abuts a stop element 33 in a bore 2 of the body member 1 and with further screwing the head 54 of the valve stem 53 is raised from its seat 58 against a spring 57 so that gas flows into the body member 1 and the bag 32. Gas passes from the bag 32 to the mask 24 by way of the body member 1, cylinder 9 and a tube 13 which is connected to the absorption cylinder 9 and has holes 30, 31 opening into the mask 24. The mask 24 is secured to a slidable sleeve 17 which surrounds the tube 13 and is normally pressed by a spring 19 to close the holes 30, 31 and to abut a sealing ring 16 in the forward end of the tube 13. In use, the sleeve 17 is pushed against the spring 19 to open the holes 30, 31, and is secured by a slidable collar 62 which holds balls 67 carried by the sleeve 17 in an annular groove 68 in an extension 11 of the cylinder 9. The mask 24 has an inflatable rubber seal. The bag 32 has a valve body through which additional gases, e.g. oxygen, may be supplied. Soda-lime is held in the absorption cylinder 9 between screens 75, 76. The device is used for the administration of cyclopropane, oxygen, helium, nitrous oxide, trichlorethylene or mixtures of such gases. The apparatus is made of aluminium except for stainless steel valve stems, plastic cylinder 9 and a soft rubber bag 32. In a modification separate gas cylinders are inserted in the handles, each cylinder being sealed by diaphragm which is pierced as the handles are screwed up. One gas cylinder containing a particular gas may be provided with flats which register with corresponding flats in the interior of one handle, which arrangement prevents more than one cylinder of that particular gas being connected in the apparatus. Additional gas may be supplied through a valve member connected with the body member carrying the handles. For resuscitation the storage bag may be of bellows type having a handle for expanding and collapsing the bag.
