Abstract

790,156. Containers for radioactive materials. FARREL-BIRMINGHAM CO., Inc. Dec. 19, 1955 [Feb. 14, 1955], No. 36331/55. Class 98(1) A transport container for radioactive material consists of a number of nested sections, each of the abutting surfaces of the sections having areas lying in different planes, and a central chamber for the radioactive material. As shawn, the container consists 'of a lower section 11 with legs 14, an upper section 13 with lifting eyes 15, and any number of intermediate sections 12. All the sections are made of material which absorbs radiation, and are secured together as by bolts 28. A liner 20 containing the radioactive material fits into registering bores in sections 11, 12 and is closed by a flat surface of section 13. Liners may be provided in several lengths, according to the number of intermediate sections 12 to be used. The abutting surfaces of the sections have annular areas in different planes joined by a frusto-conical surface. In modifications, the abutting surfaces have a square step or are continuously curved and the sections are made of sheet metal filled with material which absorbs ratiation and bolted together.
