Abstract

790,033. Cutting apparatus. SCHULPEN, K. H. N. Jan. 9, 1956 [Jan. 20, 1955], No. 667/56. Class 31 (1). [Also in Group XXIII] Apparatus for severing yielding material such as foam rubber or wadding comprises at least two thin flexible strips or bands moved in opposite directions relative to each other, in contact or in close proximity so that only one cut or kerf is formed and guiding means are provided for the bands so that cuts deviating from a straight line may be made. The bands may be given a reciprocating or rotary motion or be arranged similarly to a band knife. One band may project relative to the other and, if not provided with a cutting edge, may act only as a supporting means. As shown in Fig. 1, a band 4 is connected by a washer and bolts 5 to a roller 2 oscillated by hand or by a motor-driven crank and upper and lower runs of the band are led between guides 6, 7 and prevented from leaving the guides by a retaining block 9. The bands may. also be led over a freely-rotatable roller 11 or be connected by its ends to the roller or the ends may terminate inside or outside the guides 6, 7. Rounded-off corners may be cut using the portion of the band passing over the portion 13, 14 of the guides. The guides may be constructed to give any shape of cut and Fig. 6 shows two pairs of bands which have their ends anchored to springs 32 and are guided by guides 30, 31 so as to cut out two draughtexcluders 26, 27. By using a circular guide of helical formation, cylindrical objects can be cut.
