Abstract
522,638. Cutting clay. JONES, F. P. and JONES, F. M. Dec. 16, 1938. No. 36641. [Class 87 (ii)] For making a wire-cut clay product, such as brick, with a true or unburred edge, an incision is first made with a rotatable circular knife and then the cut is completed by the wire. Alternatively, the clay is first cut through by the wire and then the edge is trued by causing a shouldered rotary knife to traverse the cut so that the blade and its shoulder bear on the sides of the clay and true the edge. The apparatus comprises a frame 20 carrying a series of spaced cutting wires 21 which are stretched over bridges 22, 23 and tensioned by adjustable members 24, 25. The lower members 25 are adjustable horizontally in slots 43 to align the wires correctly. In advance of the wires two series of cutting rollers 29, 30 are mounted, the rollers comprising rotary knives 32 spaced by bosses and mounted on freely rotatable shafts 34, 35. The shafts are vertically adjustable, the adjustment being indicated by a scale and pointer. The severed bricks are delivered on to a table 47 above which is an adjustable steadying roller 48 also having a pointer and scale. The clay bar may be moved relatively to the knives and wires, or the knives and wires may be moved relatively to a stationary bar of clay. Adjustable troughs 56, 57 may be used as reservoirs for lubricant for the rotary knives, the lubricant from the trough 56 being fed by a wick or like syphoning device.
