Abstract
The base for an oxide-coated cathode consists essentially of nickel containing from 0.1 to 10 per cent by weight of at least one refractory carbide. Tungsten carbide is preferred, but carbides of Mo, Cr, Ta, Nb, V, Hf, Zr, Ti, La, Y, Co, Pr, Th, U, Si, and Al are also mentioned. A suitable mixture is nickel powder of grain size 4 to 5m , and tungsten carbide powder of grain size 1m , mixed in the proportions 100:3 1/2 , and sintered at 1250 DEG C. for two hours. Alternatively the carbide powder may be added to melted nickel in vacuo. Carbide of larger grain may be used for low temperature cathodes.
