Abstract
In apparatus for producing gases such as acetylene by partially combusting a liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon with an oxygen containing gas the reactants are introduced into a mixing chamber 9 through annular conduits 2 and 6 defined between an outer wall 14, a cylindrical and water-cooled partition 4 and a water-cooled central core 3, corrugated connecting parts 15 and 16 enabling the position of the partition 4 to be adjusted by screws 17 so that <PICT:0789344/IV (b)/1> a uniform mixture of the reactants is obtained in the chamber 9. The position of the central core 3 may also be adjusted by screws 20. The reactant mixture passes through a distributer 10 into a reaction chamber 11 provided with a spray 12 for cooling the gases leaving the reaction chamber. A water-cooled jacket 13 surrounds the upper part of the reaction chamber and the mixing chamber as shown. In a modification the core 3 is fixedly secured to the outer wall by a perforated ring secured to the core and the wall. Specification 756,606 is referred to.
