Abstract
<PICT:0777325/III/1> In the production of synthesis gas by the reaction of hydrocarbons and a gas containing oxygen in a reaction chamber containing a catalyst bed at a high temperature, undesired reactions are prevented and the desired reaction is controlled by feeding the reactants to the catalyst bed at a rate of flow above that at which he undesired reactions take place and optionally above the speed of ignition, cooling the reactants prior to their introduction into the reaction chamber, the cooling being to a temperature below that of ignition when the rate of flow is below the speed of ignition, and providing the reaction chamber with an internal coating of catalytically active material at those parts contacted by the reactants. As shown air introduced through inlet 1 is mixed first with oxygen from inlet 2 and then with a hydrocarbon gas from inlet 6. The resulting mixture is cooled by passing in spiral flow around a centre tube 10 which is surrounded by a coil 12, cooling water being passed through the central tube and surrounding coil via inlet 7 and outlet 13. The cooled mixture passes into a reaction chamber 18 which is lined with active catalyst material 14 and contains a catalyst bed 17. Movement of the mixing and cooling assembly with respect to the reaction chamber is made possible by stuffing box 15 and flexible connexions 16. The bed of catalyst may be arranged so that the size of the individual grains or the like of the catalyst decreases from the inlet to the outlet of the bed. Alternatively or in addition, when the catalyst consists of a catalyst and a carrier therefor, the concentration of the catalyst on the carrier may be increased from the inlet to the outlet. Inert refractory material may be placed at the inlet.
