788,176. Magnetic fluid clutches. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S. March 1, 1956 [March 3, 1955], No. 6376/55. Class 35. A magnetic-fluid clutch has a U-section field member 2, 4 whose limbs are bridged by a freely rotatable flux-carrying member 15, and a thin driven member 10, 11 in the air-gap between these members. Air-gap 14 contains the active magnetic powder, but gap 17 may also have some. Specification. 649,553, [Group XXXIV], is referred to.
