Abstract
787,752. Sewing machines. TEMPLE, M. May 25. 1956 [March 2, 1955], No. 6122/55. Class 112. A device for use with a buttonhole or button sewing machine comprises a base plate adapted to be secured in position on the machine, and a plurality of indicator elements which are slidably mounted on the base plate so as to be movable towards and away from the machine sewing needle and which may be set at desired intervals therefrom so as to indicate the required distance between a buttonhole or button from some point in the work material and/ or from another buttonhole or button. In Fig. 2 a base plate 1 is formed with a transverse slot 2 and three longitudinal T- shaped grooves 7 slidingly accommodating T-shaped bars 8<SP>1</SP>, 8<SP>2</SP>, 8<SP>3</SP>. Each bar is provided at one end with an upstanding pointer 9, and is formed with three tapped holes 10 engageable by a screw 11 for fixing the bar in adjusted position. The edges of the grooves are calibrated in inches to read from 2 to 7, and the base plate is secured to the machine frame, by means of a screw engaging slot 2, so as to position marking 2 at a distance of two inches from the sewing needle. The bars are also calibrated in inches to read from 8 to 12 and the arrangement is such that a pointer 9 may be set against the base plate markings at distances of from two to seven inches from the needle, or the bar may be reversed and the markings thereon set against a marking 7 on the baseplate to position the pointer 9 from seven to twelve inches from the needle. The position of a buttonhole is determined by placing a transverse edge of the material, or the end of a buttonhole, against a desired one of the adjusted pointers 9. The buttonholes are aligned by placing the longitudinal edge of the material against the cranked end 14<SP>1</SP> of a rod 14 adjustably mounted on a rod 12 extending transversely from the base plate. The device may be attached to the machine in one or the other of two positions situated 90 degrees apart, for the buttonholes to be made either perpendicular to the edge of the material, or parallel thereto. The device shown in Fig. 3 is adapted to position buttons, and comprises a base plate 1 formed with a fixing bracket 20 and two grooves 7 containing short slide bars 21. Each of the latter supports a. U- shaped member 22, the lower limit of which is formed with a pointer 23 for cooperating with the base plate calibrations, and the upper limb of which is formed with curved recesses 24 for the reception of the buttons. Alignment of the buttons is effected by means of an L-shaped member 25 slidably mounted on the base plate.
