Abstract
785,178. Steam irons. HOOVER, Ltd. Feb. 16, 1956 [Feb. 17, 1955], No. 4918/56. Class 138 (2). A sole plate 10 for a steam iron includes a generally U-shaped heating element 11 having its bight in the forward part of the sole plate and a pair of limbs 13, 14 extending rearwardly from it, a flash boiler 17 adjacent the rear end of one limb of the heating element, a number of steam ports 26 extending through the sole plate to the ironing surface in its forward part, and a steam passage 18 leading from the boiler alongside the heating element on one side (inside or outside) of the U, round the end of the limb remote from the boiler and alongside that limb on the other side of the U to the steam ports 26. In the example shown the steam ports are located outside the U of the heating element and the steam passage extends from the boiler inside the U. Water is supplied to the boiler 17 from a reservoir 34 through a valve 32 having an inlet 35 and an outlet 33 projecting into an opening 31 in a cover plate 30. The valve inlet 35 is controlled by a stem 36 connected to a flexible bellows 37 and controlled by a thermostat control dial 45 through a generally z-shaped slide 39. This slide has a pin and slot connection 42 with the cover shell 41 and an upstanding arm 43 co-operating with a cam surface 44 on the dial 45. The cam 44 is formed to close the valve 32 at all temperature settings except that for steam ironing where a recess in the cam permits a spring 38 to draw the slide 39 rearwardly thereby allowing the bellows 37 to expand to open the valve.
