Class 120(2) A plurality of yarns are plied together by rotating a balloon of one strand from a first supply package about a second supply package to thereby twist together strands from the first and second supply packages, the tension in the balloon being maintained substantially constant so that it may be used as a standard, the tension in the strand from the second supply package being adjusted to a value substantially equal to that in the balloon' and the two substantially equally tensioned stands being brought together for plying. In the arrangement shown yarn 33, from a package 34 is passed through a guide eye 29 then through the tensioning means 30 into the lower end of the shaft 10, through the axial passage 36 and into the passage 37 in the spindle 16. It then' passes out through an orifice 38, around a yarn storage disc 35 and then passes to the outer edge of a disc flyer 39 which balloons the yarn as at 40, around a stationary package 24 mounted on a carrier platform 22. Yarn 52 from the package 24 passes through a guide eye 46, then through a tensioning means 50 and meets the ballooning yarn 40 in the guide. eye 41 where the two yarns are plied together and the plied yarns taken up by a bobbin 58 driven by a roll 60. The tension in the two yarns are adjusted by means of the tension devices such that they are substantially equal and that the two yarns are plied in correct relationship. The guide eye 41 may be replaced by various forms of guide means some of which are rotated by the yarn and may include means for eliminating any small differences in the tensions in the two yarns immediately prior to their being plied together.
