Abstract
783,844. Suspension bridge supports. GUTEHOFFNUNGSHUTTE STERKRADE AKT.-GES. May 14, 1956 [May 14, 1955], No. 14891/56. Class 20(1) The cables of suspension bridges pass over the support apex 11 of a pair of inclined columns 1, 2 which thereby form a triangular entrance pylon to the bridge. The columns 1, 2 may pass down outside the roadway 4 and rest on a pier 3 or they may rest as in Fig. 2 on the supporting girders 7, 8 of the roadway 9. The two cables 16, 17 may cross each other at the tops and diverge as in Fig. 5 and support the roadway by hangers 18. Fig. 7 shows a plan of groups of various cables supported mainly on each pylon, their ends being connected direct to the roadway. A single pylon only in the middle or intermediate the ends may be sufficient, the cables-being carried across the spans to each end of the bridge.
