Abstract

783,526. Preventing corrosion. SANDVIKENS JERNVERKS AKTIEBOLAG.. June 22, 1954 [June 29. 1953], No. 18309/54. Class 123(1) [Also in Group XXIII] A hollow percussive drill steel has the flushing channel or the flushing channel and the outer surface provided with a phosphate coating consisting of a grained. layer of phosphate crystals, and the phosphate coating is in turn coated with a corrosion preventing coating which is partly absorbed by the phosphate coating. The steel may be cleaned by pickling or sand-blasting, then treated with a phosphate solution, and finally given a coating of an oil, a fat, a paint or lacquer, a wax, rubber, an elastomeric plastic, or a silicone. Before application of the phosphate the surface of the steel may be treated to produce a compressive stress, e.g. by shot peening or cold drawing, or an increased hardness, e.g. by nitriding, case hardening, or surface hardening, therein, and after phosphating the steel may be treated with a solution of sodium or potassium chromate or chromic acid. Drill steels so treated are stated to have longer lives than untreated steels.
