Abstract
A process of preparing a free-flowing detergent powder comprises spray-drying a slurry containing (a) an organic anionic soapless detergent, such as an alkylaryl sulphonate or an alkyl sulphate; (b) tetrasodium pyrophosphate; and (c) sodium polymetaphosphate, suitably of formula (NaPO3)n where n is greater than 3, the ratio of pyrophosphate to polymetaphosphate being within the range 4 : 1 to 1 : 1, and preferably in the range 2.5 : 1 to 2 : 1, by weight. The quantities of the constituents are desirably so chosen that, in the final powder, the amount of anionic detergent contained is 5-40 per cent, preferably 15-30 per cent, by weight, and the total amount of condensed phosphate is 5-50 per cent, preferably 20-35 per cent. Such adjuncts as the alkali metal sulphates, chlorides, silicates, borates, carbonates and orthophosphates, salts of carboxymethyl cellulose, fluorescent whitening agents, perfumes, such lathering and detergent aids as the fatty acid alkanol-amides, and anti-tarnishing agents may also be incorporated in the compositions.
