Abstract
A pharmaceutical composition is prepared by wetting edible spherical beadlets with sugar syrup in which the said beadlets are relatively insoluble, applying to the sticky surfaces one or more active pharmaceutical agents especially vitamins and minerals, drying the coated beadlets, further coating them with an edible plastic material, and then applying a confectionary coating. The edible beadlets used preferably have a sugar base. The plastic coating material may be shellac, silicone resins, zein, hydroxy methyl cellulose, cellulose acetate phthalate, polyvinyl pyrrolidene and peanut oil. The confectionary coating is formed by successive layers of sugar syrup and pulverized sugar. Additional flavouring and colouring agents may be incorporated in one or more of the coatings, and the final beadlets may be coated with wax, e.g. carnauba wax or beeswax. The active agents are so proportioned on the beadlets so as to provide the human daily requirement per unit volume of the beadlets, e.g. per teaspoonful.
